Psychoacoustical percept and correlates of tinnitus in individual with and without hearing loss

Abstract:

Introduction: Tinnitus is defined as the perception of sound in the absence of external auditory stimuli, originating solely from activity within the nervous system without corresponding mechanical or vibratory activity in the cochlea. It is a complex condition often associated with auditory and non-auditory factors. Aim: The present study aimed to evaluate the relationship between tinnitus severity, as measured by the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI), and various factors such as age, gender, degree and type of hearing loss, and audiometric configuration. Method: A total of 200 participants experiencing tinnitus were included in the study. Participants were divided into subgroups based on age, gender, type and degree of hearing loss, and audiometric configuration. THI scores were compared across these subgroups to determine any statistically significant differences. Results: The analysis revealed a significant difference in THI scores across different age groups. However, no significant differences were found for other variables such as gender, degree or type of hearing loss, or audiometric configuration. Additionally, a high standard deviation in THI scores was observed, indicating substantial variability among individuals. Conclusion: The findings support the view that tinnitus is a heterogeneous condition, with considerable variation in presentation and impact across individuals. The signs and symptoms experienced by one person may differ significantly from another, likely due to distinct underlying pathophysiological and psychological mechanisms. Therefore, individualized assessment and the use of appropriate, patient-specific diagnostic and rehabilitative tools are essential to improve quality of life for individuals experiencing tinnitus.
